We embarked on our journey without a set plan—armed only with the Off Grid Camp map and a spirit of spontaneity. Whilst we’ve put together our top recommendations, we believe that embracing the unexpected is at the heart of the best overlanding experiences. Majestic family farm in the foothills of the Cheviot Hills
Discover Hedgeley Farms, a truly exceptional off-grid escape on the Carr-Ellison family farm in North Northumberland, at the majestic foothills of the Cheviot Hills.
This peaceful retreat is surrounded by nature, offering sweeping hilltop views and access to a landscape crisscrossed by rivers, serene lakes, and woodlands. A selection of locations are available to camp across the estate featuring off-road trails, a river crossing and stunning wild swimming opportunities.

The choice is yours: Sand Quarry or ‘The Hill’?
For your final night, you’ve got a choice: the sheltered haven of an old sand quarry or a heart-pumping drive up to ‘The Hill’. The sand quarry offers seclusion amidst rugged terrain, with undulating land and craggy features giving each camping spot its own character.
If you’re up for the challenge, head for ‘The Hill,’ where rough farm tracks lead to sweeping hilltop views. It’s a test for both you and your vehicle, but the reward is a vista that stretches endlessly across the Cheviots.
If you can’t decide between them, why not stay for two nights and experience the best of both?

Alongside our top Off Grid Camp locations, here’s a few other recommendations whilst you’re in the area:
- The Street Green Lane
This green lane is like no other! Following an ancient smuggler’s route over vast moorland, “The Street” is steeped in myth and legend. In the 1800s, smugglers would sneak contraband whisky down this path, evading excise officers who patrolled the hills. Though the infamous Slimefoot pub is long gone, the spirit of adventure lives on in this wild, windswept trail. - Bamburgh Castle
Rising dramatically over the rugged Northumberland coastline, Bamburgh Castle is not to be missed. With its commanding position and rich history, it’s a perfect backdrop for overlanders looking for a scenic stop on their journey. Plus, there’s more to this castle than just history—the local Off Grid Camp hosts may even share some fascinating family drama surrounding its current ‘Lord’!
- Kielder Forest
Covering a vast area of Northumberland, Kielder Forest is an overlander’s playground, with endless trails, tracks, and breathtaking views. Whether you’re looking to get off the beaten track or just soak in the untouched wilderness, this is a must-see. The vast expanse of the forest, interspersed with lakes and reservoirs, offers endless exploration and the perfect setting for your off-grid adventure.
Northumberland is a hidden gem for overlanders, offering incredible campsites, dramatic green lanes, and stunning historical landmarks. With its mix of rugged terrain, natural beauty, and fascinating history, this region should definitely be on your next road trip itinerary.
