After picking up our poptop converted Td5 Defender 110  we have slowly been transforming it into the optimal Off Grid Camp Mobile HQ that suits our needs for scouting sites, overlanding and camping comfortably.

For a full tour of our setup, check out this YouTube video by the amazing Dale Reubin. And if you enjoy this, don’t forget to check out his full series of ‘Dream Builds’ and lots of other great Defender content!

And here are the links to all of our fave modifications:

TheAW4x4 Poptop Roof

The Landy came with one of the early AW4x4  pop tops done by Lewis up near Liverpool. We have found it an excellent piece of kit and a massive transformation compared to a roof tent.

Flatdog Roof Rack

We knew we needed a solid roof rack for all the extra kit we planned to carry. After a lot of research, we settled on the Flatdog Roof Rack from Flatdog UK. It gives us plenty of flexibility for bolting the Raxtrax and storage boxes to it.

For Those “Just In Case” Moments: The Goodwinch Winch

After a few embarrassing incidents of getting ‘stuck’ we went with  The Goodwinch TDS-9.5i Bridge Model. It’s got a stellar reputation, and the power it delivers is reassuring.

Maximizing Interior Space & Roof Access: Tredz Window Blocks & Bulkhead Steps

When getting up to the roof rack from the bonnet was always a bit precarious we saw the Tredz from Empire Tuning has given us easy and safe access to the roof.

Long Drives Made Easy: Empire Tuning’s Cruise Control

Let’s be honest, long drives on the motorway in a Defender can be a bit of a slog. To make things more comfortable, we added the Empire Defender TD5 Cruise Control Plug & Play Kit. It’s a game-changer!

Hot Showers Anywhere: The Joolca HOTTAP V2

This was a must for us! Nothing beats a hot shower after a trail run or MTB ride. The Joolca HOTTAP V2 provides on demand hot water, and is perfect for remote camping. Combined with the Vikiwood shower tent makes for a luxurious camping experience.

Keeping Clean on the Go: The Vikiwood Shower Tent

Hygiene is important, even when you’re miles from civilization. The Vikiwood Shower Tent from Ore 4×4 provides a simple and private shower solution.

Creating a Shaded Living Space: The Alucab 270 Awning

For those sunny days (and the frequent British downpour!), the Alucab Shadow Awning from Tuff-Trek was a must-have. It creates a sheltered outside living area that takes 30 seconds to set up and to put away!

Convenient Outdoor Workspace: The Pennine Overland Side Table

For cooking and prepping meals, the Pennine Overland Side Table from LR Bits is a genius addition. It’s practical and sturdy and again very very quick to set up and put away.

Carrying Water Efficiently: Safari Equip Water Tank

For extended trips, having a reliable water supply is crucial. We opted for the Defender 110 TD5/TDCI 5 Door LHS Sill Water Tank from Safari Equip. It fits neatly within the sill, maximizing space and keeping the weight low.

Secure and Organized Storage: Safari Equip Side Locker

We also needed secure and organized storage for our gear. The Defender 110 Rear Side Locker from Safari Equip provides a robust and well-designed solution. A measure 20 times cut once job!

The Ultimate Interior Transformation: Camperhaus Conversion

Finally, for the full camper conversion, we entrusted our Defender to Paul at Camperhus. He created a bespoke interior that will make our Defender feel like a true home on wheels. Was fantastic to deal with and very flexible on ideas and solutions to our needs. As he has been doing this for 15 years he was able to advise on what ideas worked and what didn’t.
